The Jounieh Touristic Port officially reopens after years of dormancy, marking a milestone for the city and for Lebanon. Led by MP Neemat Frem and implemented by Georges N. Frem Foundation (GNFF), the renovation prioritized compliance, safety, and sustainability. The port now stands as a symbol of what public-private collaboration can achieve, paving the way for new opportunities in tourism, business, and community development.
1) Driving Economic Growth
The reopening of the port is more than just a renovation; it is an economic catalyst.
Tourism Boost: As a gateway for travelers, particularly those arriving from Cyprus, the port is expected to attract visitors who will fuel local businesses and hospitality services. While the current capacity allows the docking of one ferry, there are already plans to expand operations to accommodate multiple ferries, further increasing its potential.
Entrepreneurial Momentum: With increased traffic and footfall, entrepreneurs and event organizers will have fresh opportunities to launch profitable initiatives, cultural events, and tourism-related ventures.
Job Creation: Growth in tourism and local commerce will directly translate into more employment opportunities across sectors, from hospitality to retail.
2) Social and Environmental Impact
The port was renovated with sustainability in mind, ensuring that development supports the city’s growth without compromising the health of the community or its ecosystem.
Community Hub: A dedicated area is planned for a public garden within the port, envisioned to bring families and young people together and foster a vibrant community life once funding is secured.
Social Engagement: The location and infrastructure make the port an attractive hub for social actors, impact-driven organizations, and donors to leverage for cultural interventions, maritime support, or social initiatives.
Fisheries Support: Plans to expand the local fishing sector will strengthen the livelihoods of fishermen while also benefiting related industries, such as seafood restaurants and local supply chains.
3) A Hub for Tourism and Investment
The rebranded Jounieh Touristic Port aims to position the city as a hub for tourism and commerce.
Student & Traveler Accessibility: Improved connectivity could even support university students from institutions with regional campuses, such as AUB’s Cyprus branch, making travel more affordable and accessible.
Investor Attraction: With increased visitors and activity, the city becomes more attractive to investors who can further fuel development projects and expand the local economy.
Municipality Revenue: As local businesses thrive, municipal revenues will increase, allowing for reinvestment in infrastructure and services.
4) A Model for Lebanon
The Jounieh Touristic Port’s revival is a golden opportunity to show what is possible when collaboration drives progress. It offers a blueprint for other Lebanese municipalities to follow, revitalizing their own ports and touristic hubs to generate economic activity, create jobs, and spark investment.
What’s Next?
The port’s revival is just the beginning. The port is currently in need of a dedicated ferry, a crucial step that will unlock its full potential as a vibrant touristic hub.
The port represents a canvas of opportunity for individuals, investors, organizations, and public entities to build on this foundation and shape the next chapter of Jounieh’s coastal revival.
If you’re looking to advance your impact, support local development, or explore new initiatives through this port, we invite you to reach out and get involved.
A Result of Successful Collaborations
This project could not have been possible without the joint efforts of national and local institutions working alongside GNFF and MP Neemat Frem’s leadership. General Security, the Customs Authority, the Ministries of Public Works and Transport, Agriculture, Tourism, and Environment, as well as the Chamber of Commerce, each played an important role in ensuring the port met the highest standards.
We also extend our appreciation to our implementation partners and subcontractors, whose high level of competence and compliance contributed significantly to the project’s success.
More than a list of names, this collaboration reflects the kind of unity Lebanon needs: ministries, municipalities, NGOs, and the private sector aligning their resources toward one shared goal. It is this spirit of partnership that gives the Jounieh Touristic Port its strength and offers a model for future development projects across the country.
